A widely anticipated peace conference on Syria will probably not take place in July as hoped, U.N. peace envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said Tuesday.

“Frankly I doubt whether the conference will take place in July. The opposition has their next meeting on July 4-5. So I don’t think they will be ready,” he said before starting preparatory talks with U.S. and Russian officials in Geneva.

The U.N. envoy stressed the need to hold the conference, dubbed Geneva 2, which was set to be hosted by U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon and called on the U.S. and Russia to contain the Syrian conflict.

“I very, very much hope that the governments in the region and the big powers – particularly the United States and Russia -that they will act to contain this situation that is getting out of hand not only in Syria but also in the region.”

Damascus meanwhile stressed on Monday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had no intention of stepping down at the proposed conference.
