Extremists raid Kurdish neighborhoods in Raqqah

Al-Raqqah, Syria Several Kurdish-populated neighborhoods in the city of Raqqah were targeted with heavy guns and mortars by the Islamic State in Iraq and Sham (ISIS), Ahrar al-Sham Movement backed by al-Nusra Front with some battalions that work under the umbrella of the Free Syrian Army (FSA).

The bombing launched from the area near the Roman Bridge beside the Furousiya, coincided with the displacement of many Kurdish civilians from these neighborhoods.

The shelling against the Kurdish neighborhoods in Raqqa came after clashes between the extremist armed groups and the Kurdish forces of Jabhat al-Akrad and the Popular Protection Units (YPG).

“According to residents, the reason behind shelling against the Kurdish neighborhoods is the fierce fighting between Kurds and extremists west of Tel Abyad,” ARA News reporter in Raqqa said.

In a linked context, activists said that the armed groups have arbitrarily arrested a number of Kurdish civilians during the operation in Raqqa city.

“The situation seemed similar to what happened earlier to Kurdish residents in Tel Abyad, when the same groups targetted Kurdish civilians in the city, arresting dozens of them,” the source said.

In addition to the arrest campaign, residents’ homes were stormed in order to displace people. Some Kurdish families resorted to houses of some Arabs to escape “suppression” and “detention” as members of the Islamist battalions “legalized theft of Kurdish homes in the city”.
