Tel Kocher, al-Hasaka, Syria − The Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) −the military wing of the Democratic Union Party in Syria (PYD)− declared on Sunday that  their fighters accomplished a remarkable advance in Tel Kocher after one week of clashes with the al-Qaeda linked armed groups, emphasizing that the YPG members have nearly controlled the entire city, located at the Syria-Iraqi borders and considered a strategic crossing.

“It’s the beginning of the victory of justice, equality and coexistence values, against the obscurantists Islamist groups who aim to destroy our community and civil life and impose their ideology on the residents of this area,” the YPG’s leadership said.

According to the statement issued by the General Command of the YPG on Sunday, the “al-Qaeda affiliated groups” tries to damage the social coexistence between the different components in the area.

“These groups, after defeated by our fighters, will try to nourish and promote sectarianism to achieve their aspiration of a social disorder and take over the area,” the YPG General Command said. “Islamists think that they can easily manipulate the locals’ emotions and gain their sympathy through promoting for ‘an Islamic state’, but we trust the components of the region to defeat al-Qaeda agenda in our region.”

Sources in the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units confirmed that beside the Kurds, many Arabs try to cooperate with the YPG in the city of Tel Kocher to “cleanse” the area from the Islamic battalions, particularly from Jabhat al-Nusra (al-Nusra Front) and the Islamic State in Iraq and Sham (ISIS or DAASH).

“The residents’ cooperation is a main pillar on which we can depend in defeating the Islamist forces,” the YPG General Command added. “Only then we can maintain the civil peace in Tel Kocher and other surrounding areas.

The YPG called on the residents to organize local administrative committees consisting of “actual representatives” to manage the civil affairs in the region and protect it against any potential attacks by the Islamist forces.
