Tel Abyad, Syria− A fresh surge of violence stormed the western countryside of Tel Abyad city in northern Syria on Saturday, as clashes renewed between members of the al-Qaeda splinter group of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on the one hand, and the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) and al-Akrad Front on the other hand.

The recent clashes claimed lives of more than 60 fighters from both conflicting sides.

The fresh wave of violence also caused large displacement movement among civilians, as dozens of families left Tel Abyad and crossed the borders into Turkey over the last few days.

Ahmed Hisso, spokesman of al-Akrad Front, told ARA News that the ISIL has received large reinforcements from the city of Raqqa, included armored vehicles, tanks and heavy weapons, to control the city of Kobane in Aleppo suburb. Fierce clashes took place between the two parties in Kendal village, west of the city of Tel Abyad in Raqqa suburb, according to Hisso.

Hisso added that the clashes lasted for nearly eight continuous hours and heavy weapons have been used on the part of ISIL members. However, the YPG and al-Akrad Front fighters “killed more than 50 ISIL militants and injured dozens of others”.

Meanwhile, 35 dead bodies of ISIL fighters have been reportedly captured by the YPG fighters from the battle’s location, whereas 15 other bodies were captured by al-Akrad Front.

Hisso pointed out that seven YPG fighters were killed in the last clashes with the ISIL group, whereas al-Akrad front casualties reached two deaths. “The bodies of the YPG and al-Akrad fighters will be buried soon in Kobane/Ain al-Arab.

Over the last few months, Syria’s Kurdish region saw continuous battles between the ISIL and other armed groups including the YPG, al-Akrad Front and rebels of the Free Syrian Army (FSA).
