Tel Abyad, Syria– On Friday, hundreds of residents of Azaz city took to the street in a protest against the armed aspects in the city, demanding the armed groups to leave their districts and deliver its administration to the locals.
The protest was preceded by the installation of a checkpoint in the city of Azaz by rebels of al-Tawhid Brigade −linked to the Islamic Front.
“Residents of Azaz expressed their anger regarding the newly installed checkpoint by al-Tawhid members. The demonstrators refused the armed aspects which prevailed across residential neighbourhoods after the control of rebels over the city,” said Mazin Hamish, a resident of Azaz.
According to Hamish, fighters of al-Tawhid Brigade insulted the protesters and terrorized them by firing bullets in the air.
Azaz city (north of Aleppo) was controlled by the Qaeda splinter group of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) before the withdrawal of its fighters following clashes with the fighters of al-Akrad Front and Ahrar Suriya. Currently, rebels of al-Tawhid Brigade are in power in the city.
