Urfa, Turkey− In an audiotape attributed to al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, published on Friday on the social networking sites, al-Zawahiri called on al-Nusra Front (al-Qaeda affiliate) to suspend fighting against what he described as fellow ‘Mujahideen’ in Syria , and to dedicate efforts in fighting the enemies of Islam, “Alawites, Baathists and their allies of the Shiite militias”.
In his massage to the leader of al-Nusra Front (Jabhat al-Nusra) in Syria, Abu Mohammed Joulani, al-Zawahiri said: “I address you, al-Nusra militants and all the Mujahideen in al-Sham (mainly Syria) to immediately suspend your military operations against any Islamic group and to rather direct the barrels of your guns to the enemies of Islam.”
The leader of al-Qaeda emphasized the importance of unity among the Islamic rebel groups in Syria.
“Unite your ranks and establish a legislative council to settle rifts,” al-Zawahiri said, demanding Syria’s Islamic rebel groups to stop “sedition” among them and resort to wisdom.
Al-Zawahiri speech came after months of conflict between the Syrian rebels (including al-Nusra Front) and militants of the al-Qaeda splinter group of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in several areas, north of Syria, which claimed lives of at least 1,000 fighter in the ranks of both conflict groups, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
On the other hand, al-Nusra Front did not declare any position yet in response to al-Zawahiri’s appeal.
